MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects | 2016 | Guelph, Ontario | 180,000 sqft
The University of Guelph Mitchell Athletic Centre is a large expansion to the existing W.F. Mitchell Centre, built in the 1940’s, including the design of a new main entrance onto the historic façade. The Mitchell Centre is a new athletic centre complex that includes a state-of-the-art fitness centre with a club like atmosphere, a triple gymnasium with seating for 2,500, and program spaces to accommodate recreation and fitness instruction. A new inviting and prominent entrance is added to include new treatment spaces, administrative and offices, classrooms and student social and gathering spaces. This new space is articulated to generate a dramatic and bold new entry for the entire development along the campus’s major pedestrian thoroughfare. The facility will satisfy the athletic and academic needs of the University and Guelph community and will be a venue for major sporting, research, social gathering, cultural and conference events.
