The Maasai in the Loita Plains region of Kenya's Great Rift Valley have a semi-nomadic lifestyle which has become more permanent over time. Due to traditional values and economic circumstances, the majority of Maasai children lack the basic education that other children receive in Kenya. With the transition to more permanent settlement, the Loita Maasai now require community infrastructure that covers their changing educational, health, and social needs.
Working with Stephanie Braconnier and the Nairoshi Foundation, a Kenya-based community organization, we are designing and building a community facility for the Loita Maasai that includes a primary school, kindergarten, community centre, student and teacher accommodations, and health clinic.
Knowledge transfer, community involvement, and practices that reduce impact on a sensitive environment are key to the realization of a place that will be the centre of Loita Maasai life and support their sustainable development.
We are now raising money for the second phase of this project. If you would like to make a donation, please click here in Canada and here worldwide.
