From Olhão, we took a number of day trips, first west along the coast, to the town of Tavira. Normally busy with tourists, in late December, the beautiful historic centre of Tavira was nearly deserted.
On another day, we travelled just east of Olhão to the city of Faro. We spent the morning wandering the compact, medieval-walled Cidade Velha (Old City). We stopped for lunch at a nice cafe in an orange-tree dotted square surrounded by the town hall and cathedral.
In the afternoon, we explored the windswept, rugged beaches between Albufeira and Almancil. Teeming with Northern Europeans in warmer months, they were almost completely void of people.
