portugal: olhão | part one / by Jedidiah Gordon-Moran

We rented a flat above a pink funeral parlour in the sleepy fishing town of Olhão, on the southeast coast of the Algarve.  Relatively quiet even during the summer tourist season, Olhão was practically empty over the Christmas holidays except for the local residents.  We had the cavernous restaurants practically to ourselves and enjoyed exploring the working harbour and narrow, winding, sun-faded streets.  Our apartment overlooked a whitewashed church that was home to a couple of storks with their nest under the cross.
